Have you ever heard the phrase, “Shop until you drop”? I’ve actually done it. Surrounded by every kind of shop imaginable, there I stood, unable to decide where to shop first. Brisbane, Queensland, is truly a fashion-lover’s paradise, and I was ready to dive right in. Now, of course, I’m back on the flight from Brisbane to Sydney, but my head is full of blissful memories.
The Queen Street Mall is home to over 700 shops, and the fashion-friendly vibe continues throughout several side streets. Boutiques, indie designers, vintage shops, and major labels seemed to be everywhere I turned. I was like a kid in a candy shop. All shopping and no play might have made me dull, so my evenings were spent taking in Brisbane’s nightlife.
Supper clubs, wine cellars, mellow jazz clubs, karaoke clubs, and little bistros took me on gastronomic adventures and kept the party going long after dark. I soaked in the culture of Brisbane through the plentiful live music venues, theatres, and modern and indigenous art galleries.
Even though the shopping and nightlife was fun, I also enjoyed trying some more physically demanding things, such as abseiling down Kangaroo Point and fishing off Somerset Dam. For my grand finale, I did the Story Bridge Adventure Climb, and that brings me back to today. I’ll be flying into Sydney soon, where I hope to do the Sydney Bridge Climb, too.
I don’t know what it is about bridge climbs, but I am really excited about looking out over Sydney Harbour just as I looked out over Moreton Bay in Brisbane. There’s just a feeling about conquering a bridge, standing at the top of the structure and looking out over the city below. It’s both humbling and euphoric.
So what’s next? The Opera House, Taronga Zoo, surfing at Bondi, and visiting the Blue Mountains are all on my itinerary, but only time will tell what other adventure awaits me.

New South Wales was established on 7 February 1788 with just over 1,000 settlers, many of whom were convicts. The early days of European colonisation were perilous as Europeans struggled to establish a stable community. Disease swept through the Aboriginal populations, who had little or no immunity to such European diseases as measles and smallpox.
Between drought and disease, life in early Sydney was hard. Then-Governor William Bligh of the mutinous Bounty fame managed to trigger the Rum Rebellion, in which landowners sought control of the government in Australia’s only military insurrection.
Governor Macquarie took over shortly afterward, and it was thanks to his forward-thinking dreams that Sydney began to blossom, changing from a volatile penal colony to a thriving community with churches, the Royal Botanic Gardens, parks, and cultural institutions.
During the 19th century, Sydney experienced explosive population growth, and it was officially incorporated in 1842. A complex transportation network developed, with both railways and trams. By the 1880s, steam trams had replaced horse-drawn trams, and soon even steam trams were upgraded to electric trams to create what was then the largest tram system in the world. An underground railway opened in the early part of the 20th century.
Australia was now known as the Commonwealth of Australia; Sydney became the capital of New South Wales. Sydney continued to develop throughout the 20th century in spite of the Great Depression.
